A Different Reality

An intermedia project for solo marimba and electronics that examines today’s world through the lens of the next generation by incorporating interviews with kids and teenagers.

This solo work is written for and in collaboration with percussionist Ian Rosenbaum

* About the first movement
The first movement features five girls between 10-12 years old, all residing on the West Coast of the United States. They were asked the same 25 questions that cover topics of recent events, self-identity, and their worldviews in late August/early September in 2020. Six hours’ worth of interviews were examined and edited down to be incorporated into this three-minute work.

This piece is commissioned by National Sawdust

* About the second movement

The second movement will feature teens between 13-15 years old. We're working on the piece and expecting to release it in mid-2021.

* About the third movement

The third movement will feature teenagers between 16-18 years old. We're working on the piece and expecting to release it in mid-2021.

A Different Reality was supported by New Music USA’s Creator Development Fund with major support from Howard Gilman Foundation, The Amphion Foundation, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Sony Music Group, Cheswatyr Foundation, The ASCAP Foundation, and BMI Foundation.
